Before leaving prison, Talwars give up remuneration of Rs. 50,000
Rajesh and Nupur Talwar were recently acquitted after having spent four years in Dasna Jail for the murder of their daughter Aarushi. While in prison, the dentist couple did what they do best: they served patients. Ahead of their release today, there was an extra rush. But they have refused to accept remuneration for their services, which worked out to nearly Rs. 50,000.
Talwars helped revive the dental dept at the prison hospital
13-year-old Aarushi and the Talwars' help Hemraj were found dead in their Ghaziabad house in May'08. In November'13, the couple was imprisoned. At the prison hospital, they helped revive the "near-defunct" dental department. Over the years, they treated thousands, including inmates, staff and police officials. The Talwars plan to visit Dasna every 15 days to attend to patients. Rajesh's ophthalmologist brother Dinesh will accompany.
They made almost Rs. 50,000 in four years
When they arrived, Rajesh was allotted a job in the medical team and Nupur was made a teacher. They didn't work on Sundays except emergencies. They were paid Rs. 40 each per day. The total amount due came up to Rs. 49,500. Rajesh has never stepped out of prison these years, though Nupur got "short term" bail four times to attend to her patients.
Now a fresh new life awaits the Talwars
On October 16, they will leave prison; the process was delayed as the court order reached prison authorities late. On their last day in prison, they spent hours attending to patients despite it being a Sunday. Nupur's parents will receive the couple after they're freed.
