Union law ministry announces plans for TV channel
In a bid to spread legal awareness, the Union Law Ministry announced plans to start its own TV channel. The channel will host discussions and and constitutional interpretations of sensitive legal and social issues like triple talaaq, the uniform civil code, and so on. The channel will also host debates on important judgements. The Law Ministry is currently awaiting permission from the HRD ministry.
Increasing legal awareness and accessibility for the common man
"The idea is to create a bank of enriched material on legal issues that can be best used by the common man," said a senior official closely associated with the project.
The Swayam Prabha project
According to a report by The Times of India, the Law Ministry has sought rights for one channel under the Swayam Prabha project - a set of 32 direct-to-home TV channels launched by the Human Resource Development Ministry. The Swayam Prabha Project is directed at both school and university students, and will cover a host of topics under humanities, sciences, and social sciences.

If everything goes according to plan, the Law Ministry will become the first Indian government ministry to have its own TV channel.
Law Ministry launches short film competition
As per plans, the Law Ministry's channel will air shows for a few hours daily at the beginning, and then switch to a 24x7 format. For content, the Law Ministry has opened a short-film competition for law students and filmmakers alike, which has cash prizes of Rs. 20,000-50,000 for five to 30 minutes long documentaries on relevant topics.
The Law Ministry has Prakash Jha in their sights
Recently, Bollywood filmmaker Prakash Jha was commissioned by the government to make 15 five-minute short-films for the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). Reportedly, the Law Ministry is considering recruiting Jha to make quality legal education programmes for the channel.
