Hours after SC ban, man gives triple-talaq to pregnant wife
Hours after the SC suspended the practice of triple talaq, a man in Meerut (UP) divorced his wife using the same provision. Siraj khan, a resident of Kamrannawaban in Sardhana, divorced his pregnant wife Arshi Nida, a mother of three. When reminded of the SC ban, he allegedly shouted, "For me, this is the end of my marriage with Arshi."
What happened?
According to Arshi's family, Siraj had started harassing her for dowry soon after the wedding. "They threatened to marry off Siraj to another woman," her father Sabreen said. When she delivered their third child, a daughter, they apparently threw her out of the house. Finally, Sabreen and other elders visited Siraj to sort out the matter. That's when he uttered talaq thrice.
What will happen now?
Arshi has lodged a case against Siraj for violating SC orders and under the Dowry Act. All-India Women Muslim Personal Law Board says it calls for immediate action. However, legal expert Virag Gupta says there's no clarity on what action should be taken. Moreover, a contempt case has to be filed in the court whose order has been violated. Meanwhile, Siraj's family is absconding.
