PM Modi's adopted village Jayapur has plunged into darkness
What's the story
In November'14, PM Narendra Modi adopted Jayapur village in Varanasi. Soon, it was illuminated with solar street lights. But three years later, it has plunged into darkness. The reason? Thieves are stealing batteries of the lights. Batteries of at least 80 out of 135 lights have been stolen in the last year. Informing police hasn't helped, villagers say.

Informing the cops hasn't helped the villagers till now
"About a year ago, the batteries of 50 streetlights were stolen. I lodged a written complaint at the police outpost and also informed the Rohania police," village head Srinarayan Patel said. But no action was taken. Instead, 30 more batteries were stolen. New batteries haven't been installed. The issue came to the fore again when ADG Vishwajeet Mahapatra visited the village this week.

Patel has now demanded that night patrolling be increased so such incidents can be stopped. Mahapatra agrees. He has instructed police to ensure proper vigil and to crack the case and arrest the battery thieves.
Lack
Many other problems have afflicted Jayapur
But PM Modi's adopted village has more problems. There is no institute in the village for higher studies and students have to travel 5km to Ram Manohar Lohia College or 20km to BHU. The nearest government hospital is 2km away at Jakkhini. There's no proper public transport either. Most toilets are lying unused due to inadequate facilities. Jayapur needs attention, and in several aspects.
