CareerBytes: What's the cost of preparing for UPSC CSE?
In India, the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE), colloquially called the IAS exam, is one of the toughest exams. However, with proper preparation, hard work, and dedication, one can ace it. Many aspirants, however, are often confused about the cost of UPSC CSE preparation. Here's everything to know before starting your IAS exam preparation.
Actual cost depends on mode of preparation
Before finding out the cost of CSE preparation, it's important to understand that the actual cost depends on the place and mode of preparation one chooses. Also, expenses may be higher/lower than the given estimated costs and vary as per actual cost and one's requirements.
Classroom coaching not considered affordable option
Offline classes by coaching institutes offer the best guidance and mentorship. Many aspirants prefer offline coaching when it comes to CSE preparation. However, classroom coaching isn't an affordable option. The coaching fees for Prelims and Mains can be around Rs. 1,00,000-1,50,000 or more. If someone is moving to another city for preparation, it will at least cost another Rs. 1,50,000 a year for food/accommodation.
Coaching for Optional subjects and others
Apart from the basic Prelims and Mains coaching, in the offline mode, aspirants may have to get coaching for Optional subjects, Essay paper, CSAT, Languages, test series, current affairs, newspapers, magazines, etc. (as needed), which might cost at least Rs. 70,000-1,00,000 more.
Online preparation cheaper compared to offline coaching
Online CSE preparation is considerably cheaper compared to offline coaching classes. Integrated Prelims and Mains courses and preparation programs typically do not cost more than Rs. 50,000-80,000. Online test series, mock tests, study material, Optional subject coaching, etc., might cost Rs. 40,000 or more. One might even find free exam preparatory resources online. Also, aspirants can study at their own pace and convenience.
Cost of necessary books for CSE
Irrespective of whether an aspirant chooses offline or online mode, there are certain books necessary for CSE preparation that candidates should go through. Such books include NCERT textbooks and reference books for subjects. These might cost Rs. 10,000-15,000 or more (as per requirement). However, one can find soft copies of NCERT books and several reference books online at affordable prices or even for free.
Online preparation for UPSC CSE cost-effective
One of the biggest advantages of online preparation is that it is cost-effective compared to coaching institutions. Aspirants who can't afford coaching classes can get study material and other resources at reasonable prices or even free of cost. Nowadays, information about almost anything is available on the internet, and any dedicated aspirant can crack the UPSC IAS exam even without joining coaching classes.
