    In India, the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE), colloquially called the IAS exam, is one of the toughest exams.

    However, with proper preparation, hard work, and dedication, one can ace it.

    Many aspirants, however, are often confused about the cost of UPSC CSE preparation.

    Here's everything to know before starting your IAS exam preparation.

    Actual cost depends on mode of preparation

    Before finding out the cost of CSE preparation, it's important to understand that the actual cost depends on the place and mode of preparation one chooses. Also, expenses may be higher/lower than the given estimated costs and vary as per actual cost and one's requirements.

    Offline coaching

    Classroom coaching not considered affordable option

    Offline classes by coaching institutes offer the best guidance and mentorship. Many aspirants prefer offline coaching when it comes to CSE preparation.

    However, classroom coaching isn't an affordable option. The coaching fees for Prelims and Mains can be around Rs. 1,00,000-1,50,000 or more. If someone is moving to another city for preparation, it will at least cost another Rs. 1,50,000 a year for food/accommodation.

    Coaching for Optional subjects and others

    Apart from the basic Prelims and Mains coaching, in the offline mode, aspirants may have to get coaching for Optional subjects, Essay paper, CSAT, Languages, test series, current affairs, newspapers, magazines, etc. (as needed), which might cost at least Rs. 70,000-1,00,000 more.

    Online preparation

    Online preparation cheaper compared to offline coaching

    Online CSE preparation is considerably cheaper compared to offline coaching classes.

    Integrated Prelims and Mains courses and preparation programs typically do not cost more than Rs. 50,000-80,000.

    Online test series, mock tests, study material, Optional subject coaching, etc., might cost Rs. 40,000 or more.

    One might even find free exam preparatory resources online. Also, aspirants can study at their own pace and convenience.

    Cost of necessary books for CSE

    Irrespective of whether an aspirant chooses offline or online mode, there are certain books necessary for CSE preparation that candidates should go through. Such books include NCERT textbooks and reference books for subjects.

    These might cost Rs. 10,000-15,000 or more (as per requirement). However, one can find soft copies of NCERT books and several reference books online at affordable prices or even for free.

    Online preparation for UPSC CSE cost-effective
