#TerrorAlert: Six JeM terrorists are heading to Delhi from Punjab
According to the counter intelligence wing of the Punjab Police, at least six terrorists from Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) have crossed over into the state, and are headed towards Delhi. It is suspected that the terrorists entered India from the international border at the Ferozepur area. All concerned security establishments have been duly alerted. Here are the details.
On Wednesday, a car was hijacked at gunpoint
The alert comes a day after four armed men hijacked a Toyota Innova taxi at gunpoint from the Madhopur area in Punjab's Pathankot district on Wednesday. The hijacking incident sparked fears that a Pathankot airbase-like attack would take place again. Currently, Punjab is on high alert, and security has been tightened in the district of Pathankot and nearby areas.
Recent terror attacks in Punjab
The 2016 Pathankot airbase attack left seven people dead. Earlier, in 2015, heavily armed terrorists attacked a bus in Gurdaspur, Punjab, and stormed a police station, killing six people and injuring eight others. It was the first major terror attack in Punjab in eight years.
Preventive and precautionary measures, as advised by counter intelligence
Meanwhile, the Counter Intelligence Inspector General of Punjab has urged security agencies to put up barricades at all important points and routes, and conduct thorough vehicular checks. The use of force, if required, has been authorized. All security field officers have been asked to help in planning and implementation of preventive and precautionary measures, and the BSF has been asked to strengthen border security.
Second line of defense along Pakistan border needs strengthening
"There is a need to review and strengthen the second line of defence along the Indo-Pakistan border and to coordinate closely with BSF and other police/defence establishments in your areas," said a note from the Counter Intelligence Inspector General.
