J&K: Border areas tense as Pakistan continues firing along LoC
Even as Rajouri remained tense a day after ceasefire violation by Pakistan, its army resorted to unprovoked firing yet again yesterday along the LoC in Poonch district of J&K. According to police, the cross-border firing at noon lasted for over an hour. There were no casualties. A day ago, four army personnel were killed in similar firing in Rajouri. Two others were injured.
Firing lasted for more than an hour, border posts targeted
On Sunday, Pakistani troops targeted posts and villages in Shahpur sector of Poonch with heavy and light weapons at around 12:55pm. Indian forces retaliated effectively, said a police official. Firing continued for more than an hour. Fearing tension, all emergency departments were put on alert.
BJP warns of another 'surgical strike'-type attack?
On Saturday, a Major and three Lance Naiks (120 Infantry Brigade) were killed as the Pakistani Army opened fire along the LoC in Keri sector of Rajouri. This came when J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti was in Rajouri. Terming it a "cowardly act by Pakistan", BJP MLA Ravinder Raina commented, "Bad days are in store for Pakistan. Pakistan will have to pay a heavy price."
A whopping 881 ceasefire violations recorded this year
Ceasefire violations by Pakistan reached a seven-year record this time, with 881 incidents being registered till December 10: 771 along the LoC and 110 along the IB. At least 30 people - 14 armymen, four BSF personnel and 12 civilians - were killed. The India-Pakistan truce along the IB, LoC and Actual Ground Position Line in J&K came into force in November 2003.
