Tamil teacher stabbed in front of colleagues for rejecting proposal
A 26-year-old teacher was fatally stabbed in the staff room of Mallipattinam Government Higher Secondary School in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district on Wednesday. The incident occurred in full view of her colleagues, TOI reported. The attacker has been identified as 30-year-old Madhan who allegedly committed the crime after the victim, identified as Ramani, rejected his marriage proposal.
Assailant apprehended shortly after fleeing scene
After the attack, Madhan fled the spot but was caught by police within half an hour. Thanjavur's Deputy Inspector General Ziaul Haque said the staff room was accessible as the gate was open and there was no watchman. According to police sources, the duo was in a relationship, but the woman's family was against it. The police have launched an investigation into the incident after the teacher died on the way to the hospital.
Government officials condemn attack, promise strict action
The incident has triggered widespread outrage and condemnation from political leaders and officials. Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi condemned the violence, saying. "Violence against teachers cannot be tolerated. Strict legal action will be taken against the attacker." He called Ramani's death a "huge loss" for the teaching community and added that counseling would be provided for students who witnessed the event.
Chief Minister instructs minister to visit bereaved family
Chief Minister M K Stalin has directed Minister Poyyamozhi to visit Thanjavur to condole Ramani's family. The district collector has also announced a holiday for the school and organized counseling sessions for affected students. Meanwhile, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has blamed the government for not maintaining law and order, adding that "murders and other crimes have become very common in Tamil Nadu."
