    What's the story

The findings of a recent study has generated more proof about young Indians' addiction to their smartphones.

The study, conducted by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) and the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) found that college students in India check their smartphones at least 150 times a day on an average.

    Here's more about the study.

    Quote

Anxiety and fear drive students to check phones excessively

"Anxiety and fear of missing out on information make university students check their mobile devices as many as 150 times a day on an average...which can have adverse effects on the students' health as well as academics," said Mohammed Naved Khan, the project director.

Details of the study by ICSSR and AMU

The study, titled "Smartphone Dependency, Hedonism and Purchase Behavior: Implications for Digital India Initiatives", was conducted across 20 central universities where 200 students of each university were interviewed.

The study found that almost 80% of the respondents owned mobile phones, and most among them preferred smartphones owing to their value as a computer replacement, convenience in using various services, ease of use, etc.

    Phone addiction

A majority of students use their phones for 7hrs+ daily

Further, the study found that only 26% of the respondents used smartphones primarily to make calls, while the rest used their smartphones for other purposes like accessing social media, entertainment etc.

Notably, 23% of respondents reported using their phones for over eight hours a day, 63% reported around seven hours of daily usage, while only 14% reported less than three hours of daily usage.
