Gau rakshaks stab student in Haryana
In the latest incident of cow vigilantism, members from a group of 'gau rakshaks' stabbed a second year B.A. student named Shivam in the town of Gohana in Haryana's Sonepat district. Shivam is now fighting for his life at Apollo Hospital in New Delhi. The perpetrators reportedly mistook him for a journalist and stabbed him when he refused to take photos of their protest.
Gau rakshaks want sedition charge against cow slaughterers
The Gau Raksha Seva Dal were protesting in Gohana, demanding that Congress workers in Kerala who slaughtered a cow in public last Saturday be slapped with sedition charges. They also decried the beef festivals being held in Tamil Nadu and Kerala as a symbol of defiance against the Central rule of banning sale of cattle for slaughter.
Details of the stabbing incident
Shivam had reportedly gone to the event with a journalist, and was found fiddling with a camera. Seeing Shivam, the gau rakshaks asked him to take a photograph of them handing a memorandum to district officials. Shivam refused to the ire of the group, after which he was followed to market place, accosted, and stabbed multiple times in his chest and stomach.
Victim shifted to Delhi due to critical condition
"He [Shivam] was admitted to local hospital initially but taken to Delhi because of his condition," said Police inspector Ajaib Singh.
Suspects have been charged with attempt to murder
Three perpetrators were identified and slapped with "attempt to murder" charges. The main suspect is a 19 year old named Mohit. The other two suspects, who are currently on the run, are Mohit's relatives. The Gau Raksha Seva Dal denounced them, saying they were troublemakers who joined any and every protest.
