Protests at Hyderabad's Osmania Univ after student found hanging
A first-year MSc student was found hanging in a washroom at Hyderabad's Osmania University yesterday, leading to massive protests on campus. Cops said a suicide note had been found near the body of 21-year-old Physics student Eramaina Murali. This comes 10 days after a similar incident at Chennai's Satyabhama University, which saw students going on a rampage after a peer committed suicide.
What happened?
Murali, hailing from Siddipet district of Telangana, was last seen on Saturday evening and hadn't come to his room thereafter. He didn't join his friends for breakfast/lunch the next day either. In the evening, his body was found hanging in the washroom of Manair hostel.
'Don't want to fail in exams'
Murali had purportedly written in the suicide note: "I'm not able to continue studies and I am afraid I might fail in the examinations. I don't want to fail. Hence, I am ending my life." "Anna (brother), don't leave mother," he wrote, adding the news of his suicide shouldn't reach her. However, some claimed the note was fabricated as the handwriting didn't match Murali's.
Thousands protested against the state govt, demanded compensation
Students said Murali was depressed over "unusual delay in the issuance of job notifications by the Telangana government". Thousands gathered in front of the college hostel and shouted slogans against the government. Students have demanded a compensation of Rs. 50L for his family. Initially, they refused to let police take his body away. Additional forces were then called in to disperse them.
