AMU prof's wife alleges 'triple talaq', but no law available
Months after the SC banned triple talaq, an AMU professor's wife has accused him of divorcing her through WhatsApp and harassing her for dowry, among others. His daughter has also filed a complaint against him for threatening to kill his children. Police have booked a case for the alleged crimes but not for triple talaq, as there're no relevant sections in the IPC yet.
What happened?
Yasmeen Khalid alleged her husband Khalid Bin Yusuf Khan has been harassing her since long. He had taken away jewelry worth Rs. 5L she had brought as dowry. He divorced her via WhatsApp by invoking triple talaq, she said. The man reportedly has a harassment case filed against him by a female student. But he used his position in AMU to evade police action.
Despite triple talaq ban, there are no relevant laws yet
In August, the SC suspended triple talaq till the government frames relevant laws. Legal experts said the judgement would affect all cases where women have challenged triple talaq given to them by their husbands. Their marital status is likely to be restored. But there have been several related cases reported even afterwards. The authorities need to make stringent laws soon to check the matter.
