UP: SP leader shot dead by bike-borne assailants
Two motorcycle-born assailants shot dead Samajwadi Party leader Sumer Singh in Gopalpur Baghaut village, Ballia, of Uttar Pradesh. The former secretary of SP's district unit, was on his way to a wedding when the assailants, with their faces covered, intercepted him and opened fire. A passerby, identified as Bhuteli Yadav, was also injured. He is undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
Political rivalry purportedly the motive
Singh's son has named four people in his police complaint. The family alleges the attackers belong to the same village. According to police, prima facie the motive is election rivalry. Singh was the former village head. His wife is now the 'gram pradhan'.
