Beating all odds, Assam paan shop-owner's son cracks UPSC CSE-2018
The UPSC announced the final results of the Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2018 on 5 April and Kanishak Kataria emerged the topper, securing AIR-1. From Assam, meanwhile, 13 candidates cracked the prestigious exam. However, Rahul Kumar Gupta, the son of a paan shop owner in Assam's Sivasagar, scripted an inspirational tale as he defied all odds to clear the CSE. Here's more on him.
Rahul Kumar Gupta secured 286th rank in UPSC CSE
While Mriganka Sekhar Pathak emerged the UPSC Assam topper with AIR-103, Rahul Kumar Gupta also brought pride to his state by securing AIR-286 in the prestigious exam. Rahul thanked his family members, teachers, and all others who supported him for his achievement. Rahul was quoted as saying, "I thank all, who have supported me, this would not have been possible without their support."

Rahul's father Omprakash Gupta expressed immense happiness over his son's achievement. The owner of a small paan shop also said it was very tough for him to maintain his family of eight. Omprakash said he works for 15 hours a day to run the family.

Omprakash said, "I really had to work hard to run the family with this small paan shop, Janata Paan Bhandar. I open the shop at six in the morning and continue till 9 pm." "It was really hard because I had six students in my family. However, today, my son's result has waived of all my hard work over the years," he added.
Rahul was very talented and academically brilliant, says his mother
Meanwhile, Rahul's mother Anita recalled the days when she had to manage the house with the earnings from their small paan shop. "...I am very happy. Right from his childhood, Rahul was very talented and academically brilliant. While his friends would be busy playing, he never went...to join them. He would always study in one of the corners of our small house," she said.
My family is swelling with pride: Rahul's brother
"My family is swelling with pride. My mother broke down after receiving the news. We are flooded with congratulatory messages," Abhishek Gupta, Rahul's younger brother, was quoted as saying by Time8. "We are proud of bhaiya. He has been a Civil Service aspirant ever since he passed his Higher Secondary examination. This was his third attempt," he added.
Rahul is pursuing higher studies from JNU
Rahul Kumar Gupta is reportedly pursuing his postgraduation from Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi. He had completed his graduation from Kirori Mal College, New Delhi. Rahul did his schooling and completed his 10+2 education from Sivasagar.
