Sold by father, gang-raped, ignored by cops, woman burns self
A woman, hailing from Uttar Pradesh's Hapur is fighting for her life after she set herself on fire. What led to this extreme step is weeks of torture, which she had to endure after her father sold her off for Rs. 10,000. Her "keeper" and his friends raped her and when she approached the police, she was shunned. Here's her disturbing story.
After her husband died, the woman's father sold her
The woman said to be in her 20s, is a widow. After her husband died, her father and her aunt sold her off. The man who "bought" her had reportedly taken loans from many people. Unable to repay the money, he sent the woman as a domestic help to his friends' houses. There, the woman was repeatedly raped and harassed, TOI reports.
Raped by five men, woman claimed cops didn't listen
Her ordeal didn't end there. When the woman approached the police, they refused to register a complaint. Let down by everyone, the woman tried to self immolate herself on April 28. She reportedly suffered 80% injuries and is battling for her life at a private hospital in Delhi. The woman has alleged she was raped by five men and police took money for a cover-up.
Meanwhile, Swati Maliwal has written a letter to Adityanath
The horrendous case caught the attention to Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal, who has written a letter to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. "The survivor has suffered unimaginable harassment at the hands of the UP Police in Hapur who have refused to register an FIR despite repeated complaints," her letter read. Reportedly, Maliwal explained the series of events to Adityanath.
Maliwal wants UP government to probe police's role
Maliwal has asked the state BJP government to compensate the victim and take steps for her rehabilitation. She also wants the administration to probe the role of Hapur Police. On Sunday, Hapur SP Yashveer Singh said a case has been registered against 14 persons, under relevant sections, and a probe is underway. Rajesh Kumar Bharti, station house officer at Babugarh police station, concurred.
