J&K: Two armymen, three terrorists killed in Shopian encounter
Two army personnel were killed and three injured in an encounter with terrorists in J&K's Shopian district. Three terrorists were also neutralized in the encounter that took place yesterday night. Counter-operations are underway. There were reports of civilian casualties, but there's no official confirmation yet. The gunfight broke out after security forces launched a search operation in Awneera village of Zainapora area.
What happened?
According to police, terrorists fired on the personnel during the raid, who retaliated. The five injured soldiers were shifted to Army's 92 Base Hospital, where Sepoy Ilayaraja P (from Tamil Nadu's Kandani) and Sepoy Gawai Sumedh Waman (from Maharashtra's Lonagra) succumbed to injuries. The slain terrorists have been identified as Adil Ahmad Malik (LeT), and Irfan-ul-Haq Sheikh and Umar Majid Sheikh (Hizbul Mujahideen).
Over 130 terrorists, including six wanted leaders, killed this year
During and following the encounter, seven civilians reportedly sustained pellet injuries when locals clashed with forces to break the cordon around Awneera. According to official figures, 132 terrorists have been killed in J&K encounters this year, including LeT's Abu Dujana and Hizbul's Sabzar Ahmad Bhat.
