'Hurry...she may have committed suicide': Kolkata hospital's chilling call audios
A series of frantic phone calls was made by the RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata to the family of a 31-year-old trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered on August 9, India Today reported. The first call requested the parents to immediately come to the hospital as their daughter was unwell. "Your daughter is not well. Can you please come to the hospital immediately?" the assistant superintendent of the hospital told her family.
Hospital staff's vague responses raised concerns
The woman's father, feeling something was wrong, requested more information, to which the staff member simply stated, "She is not well. We're admitting her. Can you come quickly?" The staff further told him that the doctors would provide details upon their arrival. "We found your number and called because you are the family," the staff said. This lack of clarity continued into the second call when the assistant superintendent urged them to hurry as their daughter's condition had worsened significantly.
Final call revealed the tragic truth
The father then pressed for more details and asked who he was speaking to. "I am the assistant superintendent," the staff member clarified, stating that he was not a doctor. In a state of desperation, the father asked if any doctors were present, but the call ended abruptly. The third and final call from the hospital staff member revealed the tragic truth. The assistant superintendent, sounding extremely anxious, stated: "She might have committed suicide or died. The police are here."
Family demands answers, suspect arrested
The grieving family is now seeking answers from the hospital about what exactly happened in the critical moments leading up to their daughter's death. On August 10, Kolkata Police arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer who frequently visited RG Kar Hospital premises. A Bluetooth device found near the victim's body and CCTV footage showing him on the third floor of the hospital where she was found dead led to his arrest.
CBI takes over probe, confirms rape and murder
The Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation from Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 13. According to CBI sources, Roy confessed during interrogation that he had attacked the woman while she was resting in a seminar hall during her 36-hour-long shift. The autopsy confirmed she was raped and murdered, with 25 internal and external injuries found on her body.
