IAS officer-turned-politician Shah Faesal detained while trying to leave India
Shah Faesal, the former IAS officer who started his political career months ago, was detained on Wednesday at Delhi airport while he was trying to leave India. He has been sent to Srinagar and put under house arrest under the Public Safety Act, reports said. Faesal was on his way to Istanbul when he was stopped, claimed NDTV. Here are more details.
Earlier, Faesal said he was unhappy with his job
In 2009, Faesal became the first Kashmiri to top the UPSC examination. Citing "unabated killings" and "marginalization of Indian Muslims", he quit his job earlier this year. On his tenure as a civil servant, Faesal had said, "I spent the last 10 years in jail. During these 10 years, in many ways, I tried to serve my people and succeeded as well."
"Politician" Faesal has been critical of Centre's policies
Soon after quitting his job, Faesal started a new party named Jammu and Kashmir People's Movement (JKPM). Interestingly, he didn't participate in Lok Sabha elections. Recently, Faesal emerged as one of the strongest critics of the government's move of withdrawing the special status of J&K. On Sunday, he tweeted there will be no Eid in the valley till "everything is returned".
"No Eid till the last bit of insult is avenged"
Faesal's tweet was slammed by many
Faesal's tweet on Eid garnered widespread criticism and many accused him of encouraging a plebiscite. Karlapu Kiran Kumar, who sat for UPSC examination with Faesal, tweeted: "We both wrote the UPSC same year. He got the first rank. I was at rank 370. And now, I'm here in Mumbai serving the nation that has given me this opportunity. And he..."
Earlier, Faesal said Kashmir needs non-violent mass movement
On Tuesday, Faesal tweeted, "Kashmir will need long, sustained, non-violent political mass movement for restoration of the political rights. Abolition of Article 370 has finished the mainstream. Constitutionalists are gone. So you can either be a stooge or a separatist now. No shades of grey."
