Watch: Visuals from the spot
Fire suspected to have started in drums of solvent
According to HT, the blasts occurred in 25 drums at Novephene Specialities' plant, each containing 200L of solvent, at around 11:15pm, and quickly spread to adjacent factories, most of which are chemical units. Four units were partially or completely destroyed. Hundreds presumed the explosions, "sounding like a huge bomb," was an earthquake, and rushed out on to the streets.
Officials to now probe cause of fire
More than 25 fire tenders were rushed in from Bhiwandi, Vasai, Palghar, Thane and elsewhere. Teams of police, revenue and health personnel were also assisting. Rescue personnel recovered three unidentified dead bodies. At least three others are critical and undergoing treatment. Officials believe the death toll might rise. A case of accident has been lodged. The cause of the fire will now be ascertained.
