SC raps Karnataka HC judge for calling Muslim-dominated area 'Pakistan'
The Supreme Court on Friday criticized a Karnataka High Court judge for referring to a Muslim-majority neighborhood in Bengaluru as "Pakistan." The contentious remark was made by Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda earlier this week during a landlord-tenant dispute hearing in Gori Palya, a western part of the city. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, leading a five-judge bench, expressed concern over the "gratuitous remark" made by Justice Srishananda.
Supreme Court seeks report on controversial remarks
"We have asked the AG and SG to assist us. We ask the registrar general of the High Court to submit a report to this court after seeking administrative directions from the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court," stated the top court. The report is expected within two weeks, with a hearing scheduled for next Wednesday.
What did Justice Srishananda say
During the landlord-tenant dispute hearing this week, the judge said, "Go to that Mysuru Road flyover. Every auto rickshaw has got 10 people. It is not applicable because the Mysore flyover right up to the flower market from Gori Palya is in Pakistan, not in India." In another video, the judge tells a female counsel that she seemed to know a lot about the opposing party, implying that she could even be able to determine the color of their underwear.
