Mother claims Punjab police's recklessness killed son, SC orders probe
The Supreme Court has taken cognizance of a mother's plea and ordered a SIT probe into the death of her son in Punjab. While police claim her son was a drug dealer, the mother maintains she lost her child due to careless driving of police. Her earlier pleas were rejected by Punjab and Haryana Court after which she knocked on doors of the apex court.
Police claim his son was drug dealer, mother denies it
Vikram Singh died in 2016 due to reckless driving by police, her mother Sukhwinder Kaur claimed. But police maintained that he was a drug dealer and died after his motorbike hit a carriage vehicle while fleeing. Kaur denied these charges and said her son had no connection with narcotics. She claimed police were framing her son to save themselves.
Lower court noted enough proof wasn't given, dismissed mother's plea
Kaur approached Punjab and Haryana High Court in February seeking a fresh investigation in the case. Dismissing the plea, the court said Kaur didn't furnish enough proofs to support her claims. The court noted there wasn't evidence to question the credibility of police officers investigating the case or those who conducted the inquiry. However, the mother's request was heard by the Supreme Court.
Conduct thorough investigation, Supreme Court tells
Justice R Banumathi ordered Director General of Police to constitute an SIT to probe the death. Two inspectors who have enough experience of the investigation will be part of the team, the apex court directed. "The team so constituted shall file its report before this court before the next date of hearing," the bench said and fixed the hearing for a later date.
