Unnao rape survivor be shifted to AIIMS, orders SC
The Supreme Court directed today that the Unnao rape survivor be airlifted from Lucknow to receive better care at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. The 19-year-old woman, who accused now-expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar of rape, was critically injured in a road accident in RaeBareli last week. 19-year-old to be moved from KGMU, Lucknow to AIIMS
A Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose, delivered the order after the family's lawyer, D Ramakrishna Reddy, informed the bench that the survivor's mother has agreed to move her daughter to Delhi from King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow. Earlier today, SC had adjourned the hearing for Friday as no member of the family had sought the transfer.
Injured lawyer's family could also seek relocation, says SC
Along with the transfer of the Unnao rape survivor, the SC also clarified that the family of her lawyer, who was injured in the same accident, could also approach the bench, and seek the same relief if they wish to, News18 reported.
Process of taking her off ventilator has started: KGMU
According to a medical bulletin issued by KGMU, dated August 5, the rape survivor's condition has been improving. "The Unnao rape survivor (is) conscious...improving. She is following instructions and her eyes are open. Her fever has lessened. The process of taking her off ventilator has started. Blood pressure continues to be a concern," the statement is quoted by NDTV. Reportedly, she has contracted pneumonia.
Injured lawyer also breathing without ventilator, reports hospital
Further, the injured lawyer, who is also receiving treatment at the same hospital, is also showing signs of improvement, the hospital stated, adding that he has been managing to breathe without needing the aid of a ventilator.
Separately, Sengar, co-accused Shashi Singh, to be shifted to Tihar
Meanwhile, the Tis Hazari Court in Delhi has ordered to shift the main accused Sengar, and co-accused Shashi Singh, to Tihar Jail in Delhi from Lucknow jail. The two will be produced in court on Wednesday. Incidentally, on Friday, the Uttar Pradesh government had also ordered the transfer of the rape survivor's uncle from Raebareli district jail to Tihar jail.
July 28: Survivor's car hit by truck in Raebareli
Meanwhile, here are the series of events which unfolded in the last few days: On July 28, the woman was traveling to Raebareli, along with her two aunts and lawyer, to visit her uncle, who's serving life-term in prison. A truck, with its number plate blackened, rammed into their car near Ataura outpost, killing the aunts, and severely injuring the survivor and her lawyer.
CBI conducting probe; booked 10 people for murder
Since the car-truck collision, the Central Bureau of Investigation has taken over the probe, booking 10 people for murder, including Sengar. As part of its probe, the CBI conducted raids across 17 places in Uttar Pradesh. A three-member CBI team also visited Sengar in Sitapur district jail for questioning and checked his visitor records. On Wednesday, SC set a seven-day deadline for CBI's probe.
August 1: Two years after Unnao rape, BJP expels Sengar
Sengar, a four-time legislator from Bangarmau in Unnao district, was expelled from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday, two years after the Unnao rape. In 2018, he was accused of raping the woman on two occasions a year before, when she was a minor.
