Pollution levels to spike on Diwali despite SC's firecrackers ban
Turns out the SC ban on firecrackers in Delhi-NCR might not even have the intended results. According to the IMD, particulate matter (PM) pollution is set to spike on Diwali even if there are fewer crackers; it has been attributed to slower surface winds. A similar forecast by SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research) complemented IMD's predictions.
IMD predicts slower surface winds and slower dispersal of pollutants
The IMD says a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal will intensify into a depression in the next two days. It will then move towards Andhra. "This system is expected to bring in warm and humid Easterly winds in UP and will restrain the prevailing North-Westerly winds and slow down the surface winds in Delhi-NCR." That will, in turn, affect dispersal of pollutants.
SAFAR report complements IMD's predictions
According to a report by SAFAR, "The highest levels of PM10 and PM2.5 are expected between 11am to 3am on the night of 19-20, October. Air Quality will start to improve from 21st." It added, "Moisture in Delhi air is increasing and morning temperature is declining. This may increase atmospheric holding capacity of firecracker emissions." However, it ruled out a repeat of Diwali 2016.
Two cops suspended for failing to enforce SC ban
Meanwhile, two cops have been suspended for failing to enforce the SC ban in their beat areas. The personnel at Mongolpuri police station were suspended for allegedly "not knowing" what was going on in their areas. A 40-year-old shopkeeper has also been arrested for selling crackers. It is being probed if the two cops had colluded with him and were aiding him.
