    What's the story

Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today flagged off the 'Run for Unity', an event organized to mark the birth anniversary of freedom fighter and India's first Home Minister, Sardar Vallabhai Patel.

The event, held in Chennai (Tamil Nadu capital), was also attended by State Ministers D Jayakumar and SP Velumani.

Later in the event, Sitharaman recalled the contributions of Patel in uniting India.

Sitharaman also pointed out that Narendra Modi was scheduled to dedicate to the nation the freedom fighter's statue in Gujarat.

Titled the "Statue of Unity," the 182-meter tall figurine is touted to be the world's "tallest".

"We are attending the Run for Unity to mark that (dedication of Patel statue). Youngsters have to play an active role in keeping the country united," she noted.
