Sanjay Roy to plead 'not guilty' in Kolkata doctor's rape-murder
Sanjay Roy, the main suspect in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, has told his lawyer that he is innocent, reports said. To recall, Roy was arrested on August 10 based on CCTV footage and the discovery of his Bluetooth headset at the crime scene. The footage showed him entering the seminar hall around 4:03am on August 9, when the crime is believed to have taken place.
Roy maintains innocence during polygraph test
During a polygraph test, Roy consistently maintained his innocence. He was asked 10 questions, including what he did next after allegedly murdering the woman. In response, he told the CBI sleuths that the question was invalid because he didn't murder her. He further claimed that he found the victim unconscious and covered in blood when he entered the seminar hall of the hospital and fled in panic.
Roy's lawyer suggests possible security lapse
Roy's lawyer, Kavita Sarkar, has suggested that the real culprit could be someone else who exploited a security lapse. "If he had access to the seminar hall so easily, it shows that there was a security lapse on that night and someone else could have taken advantage of that," she told Times of India. She has called for CCTV footage to verify Roy's claims and criticized the Central Bureau of Investigation for withholding case details from the defense.
Roy currently held in high-security ward
Roy is currently being held in a high-security ward at Presidency Jail. According to prison officials, he has been largely isolated and appears nervous, exhibiting signs of fear. An officer noted that Roy engaged in a detailed discussion with his lawyer, Sarkar, under strict security measures. During the investigation, police noted several injuries on Roy, including recent abrasions on his left cheek, left hand and back of his left thigh which indicated possible signs of struggle.
