Ex-principal ordered renovation near Kolkata hospital rape-murder crime scene: BJP
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal has alleged that Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, ordered renovations near the seminar hall where a doctor was found raped and murdered. State BJP chief Sukanta Mazumdar shared a purported letter on Thursday, allegedly signed by Ghosh, which initiated the renovation work a day after the murder. The letter is dated August 10, one day after the victim's body was discovered.

The letter was addressed to the executive engineers of several departments of the Public Works Department, Kolkata. It states that hospital authorities wanted to repair attached toilets due to deficiencies in on-duty doctors' rooms and separate attached toilets in various departments of RGKMC&H, Kolkata. "You are hereby requested to do the needful immediately as per the demand of the Residents's Doctors of RGKMC&H," it read.

Renovation allegations amid nationwide outrage
A political row had erupted earlier over the renovation work at the hospital near the seminar room where the victim's body was recovered. Amit Malviya, the head of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s IT cell, claimed that walls were demolished in the Chest Medicine Department where the crime occurred. He accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Kolkata Police of apathy and a failed cover-up attempt.
Arrests made in connection with rape-murder case
In the aftermath of the crime, Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, for his alleged involvement in the rape and murder. Later, the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested Ghosh in connection with alleged financial misconduct at the establishment. Both suspects have undergone polygraph tests or lie-detector tests as part of their interrogation process.
