Telangana: Russian cyclist on world-tour mistaken for thief, beaten up
A Russian cyclist on a world tour was allegedly mistaken for a thief in Telangana's Kamareddy, and beat up by locals. Friday night, a thunderstorm forced V. Oleg to pitch his tent by a field at Bhiknoor. After the rain stopped, a farmer came to check damage to crops, saw Oleg inside the tent and thought he was a thief.
Man suffered injuries on head, jaw, arms
Oleg, a resident of Moscow, was cycling from Nizamabad, Telangana, to Shirdi, Maharashtra, when the incident happened. When the farmer confronted him in Telugu, he didn't even understand. But before he could open Google translator, the local attacked him with a torchlight. Soon, the farmer's neighbors joined in and thrashed the cyclist. Oleg sustained injuries on his head, jaw and arms, and is now undergoing treatment.
Several incidents of attacks on foreign tourists in recent times
Incidents of attacks on foreign tourists had shaken India last year. In October, a 24-year-old Swiss couple was harassed and attacked with stones and sticks by a group of youths in Fatehpur Sikri, UP. Instead of helping, others reportedly recorded the injured couple on camera. Two weeks later, a German tourist was beaten up at the Robertsganj railway station in the state.
