65% of those killed in road-accidents in 18-35 age group
As many as 65% of the people killed in road accidents are in the 18 to 35 years age group, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari informed Lok Sabha. He also said 786 "black spots" have been identified along highways where most accidents take place and measures to rectify flaws are being carried out. He said there are some spots where over 50 accidents took place.
Gadkari urges Sonia Gandhi to help pass Motor Vehicle Bill
Gadkari said people should avoid drunk driving and talking on cell phone. He urged UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to help pass the Motor Vehicle Bill pending in Rajya Sabha for over a year, saying most problems faced by commuters will end. He said the bill doesn't aim to usurp powers of state governments by giving the power to register vehicles to private parties.
States' powers wouldn't be taken away by new bill: Gadkari
Deputy Speaker M Thambi Durai said by giving powers to private parties, the powers of the state would be taken away and they would become mere municipalities. He said it would set a bad precedent as RTOs are being considered as corrupt. Gadkari said he is willing to give in writing that the power of states wouldn't be taken away by the new bill.
