Kolkata rape-murder: ED searches house of RG Kar ex-principal's father
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday conducted searches at multiple locations in Kolkata, including the residence of Satya Prakash Ghosh, father of former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Principal Sandip Ghosh. The raids are part of an ongoing investigation into financial irregularities at the medical institution. The ED is working alongside the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe these allegations.
Former deputy superintendent's allegations against Ghosh
On Wednesday, the ED questioned Akhter Ali, a former non-medical deputy superintendent of RG Kar Hospital. Ali had previously accused Ghosh and others of corrupt practices in a letter to the state vigilance commission dated July 14, 2023. He alleged that contracts worth crores were awarded to ineligible bidders and claimed that the agency handling the hospital's bio-medical waste had not been receiving the required amount for several months.
ED investigates Ghosh's properties and wife's actions
The ED is currently investigating at least seven properties owned by Ghosh and his wife, suspected to be "purchased out of proceeds of crime." Documents related to these properties were found during searches at Ghosh's residences and those of his relatives last week. The agency also revealed that Sangeeta Ghosh, who served as an assistant professor during her husband's term as principal, purchased two immovable properties without state government approval but was granted post facto approval in 2021.
Ghosh's illegal activities and arrest details
Ghosh is also accused of illegally using dead bodies for research, selling biomedical waste, and favoring certain firms without valid tenders. The Calcutta High Court directed the CBI to investigate these allegations on August 23. A case was lodged against Ghosh and three firms by the CBI a day later. After nearly 15 days of questioning, Ghosh, his bodyguard, and two vendors were arrested this month. The special CBI court has placed the accused under judicial custody until September 23.
