Mamata pays tribute to 2004 Tsunami victims, hails rescue workers
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today remembered the victims of the 2004 Tsunami, that had devastated coasts of several south and southeast Asian countries on this day. Banerjee also praised those who had shown courage in face of the disaster by volunteering to help the affected. "Salute to those who volunteered to help the affected across the regions," Banerjee tweeted today.

The tsunami had killed 2,00,000+ people across a dozen countries
On December 26, 2004, an undersea earthquake with a magnitude of 9.1 had struck with an epicenter off the west coast of northern Sumatra. The tsunami caused an immense loss on the rim of the Indian Ocean. It killed at least 225,000 people across a dozen countries, with Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Thailand sustaining the massive damage.
