Punjab cop poured acid down man's mouth to get 'confession'
In what appears to be a horrific case of prison interrogation, a sub-inspector of the Punjab Police was booked by the CBI's special crime branch for pouring acid into the mouth of a man who was arrested in a drug case. The alleged incident took place last year, and a case has been lodged against ASI Gyan Ishwar Singh. Here's more.
Singh had already been arrested by the CBI earlier
The case came to light after the CBI started probing Singh based on a Punjab and Haryana High Court order. The CBI had already arrested Singh on December 27 on the allegations that he had falsely implicated a man in a case, and had gone on to rape his wife. Singh had also strip-searched the wife at the police station, and had taken money from her.
The acid pouring case
In the acid pouring case, one Joga Ram alleged that he had been picked up from his house by four cops, including Singh, in April last year and had been tortured. Then, Ram alleged that the ASI poured acid into his mouth in an effort to forcefully extract a confession. However, Singh claimed that Ram had consumed the acid when they had apprehended him.
Singh has been booked under Section 326-A
A case under Section 326-A (punishment for acid throwing) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against ASI Singh, who was posted at the Phillaur police station at the time of the incident.
The man arrested in the first case has been released
As per the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, both cases are now being probed by the CBI. Meanwhile, on January 30 this year, the man arrested in the first case was released on the High Court's orders after the CBI found in its probe that he had indeed been falsely implicated by ASI Singh.
