Rajiv Mehrishi succeeds Shashi Kant Sharma as CAG
Following the completion of his term as Union Home Secretary on 30 August, Rajiv Mehrishi has taken over as India's Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), succeeding Shashi Kant Sharma who demitted office on 22 September. President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office to Mehrishi at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The event was attended by Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu and PM Narendra Modi. Know more!

Mehrishi, the 13th CAG of India
Mehrishi is a 1978-batch (Retired) Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Officer of the Rajasthan cadre. The 62-year-old will have a three-year tenure as the CAG, as the constitutional authority is appointed for six years or till the incumbent attains 65 years of age, whichever is earlier. He holds degrees of MBA from the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow, UK), and MA and BA from Delhi University.
Worked for both Union, State governments at top positions
Before his two-year fixed term as Home Secretary, Mehrishi held various positions in the Centre and Rajasthan as well. He worked as the Economic Affairs Secretary and Chief Secretary of Rajasthan. Mehrishi was the Indian Government's Finance Secretary and worked in the Ministries of Petroleum, Corporate Affairs, Overseas Indian Affairs, and Chemicals and Fertilizers. He also worked with the President and Cabinet Secretariats.
CAG is appointed by President
The President of India appoints the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India based on a recommendation by the Prime Minister. CAG is a constitutional functionary and is primarily entrusted with the responsibility of auditing the accounts of the Central and State governments.
