In one day, woman given 'Triple Talaq', gang-raped by in-laws
In a disturbing incident, a woman in Rajasthan was allegedly raped by her father-in-law and another relative, and beaten by her brother-in-law, while her husband pronounced Triple Talaq (instant divorce) to her, all on the same day. According to an FIR filed at the Women Police Station of Bhiwadi on Monday, the woman, aged around 25, was given the divorce, last Friday. Here's more.
Husband, brother-in-law, father-in-law, and another relative booked
Following the complaint, the husband has been booked for giving Triple Talaq, which was criminalized by the central government earlier this year, under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019. Furthermore, the father-in-law and the other relative have been charged for gang-rape. Investigations in the matter are currently underway. However, no arrests have been made so far.
Same police station recorded another 'Triple Talaq' case on Tuesday
At the same police station, another case pertaining to Triple Talaq was registered on the directions of a local court on Tuesday. The woman victim has alleged that her husband gave her instant divorce over the phone on November 17. She also mentioned names of her father-in-law, mother-in-law and other relatives of the husband in the FIR. The police is now investigating the matter.
What is Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act?
The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, popularly known as Triple Talaq Bill was tabled in the Parliament by Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and subsequently passed by both Upper and Lower houses, in July. The Bill bans the contentious practice of Triple Talaq in any form (spoken, written, or electronic), and leads to three years of imprisonment with a fine.
