Suicide counselors stop deaf-and-dumb woman from hanging herself through video-call
A deaf and dumb newly-married woman was saved from committing suicide in Rajasthan's Hanumangarh district in a coordinated action by local police and suicide counselors who were in touch with her through a video call from Indore. The 23-year-old woman, allegedly suffering from depression, found the counselor couple online and told them three days ago that she wanted to end her life. Here's more.
Woman calls counselor after deciding to commit suicide
The woman searched the contact number of the counselors, Gyanendra Purohit and his wife Monica, and called them three days back. On Thursday night, she again made a video-call to Purohit, who is the state coordinator for Muk Badhir police helpline at Indore, seeking help. But this time she was standing on her bed and made a noose of her dupatta for hanging herself.

Monica, Director of Indore's Anand Service Society for deaf children, said: "This was a totally unexpected scene. My husband was in Mumbai, he called me up and I started counseling the woman through sign language. Simultaneously, we coordinated with the Hanumangarh police seeking their help."

"The woman told us that her father had sexually abused her since childhood and now her husband is also brutal to her. Therefore she is under depression and wanted to take the extreme step," Monica said. The counselor couple intimated Hanumangarh SP who directed a local police team to locate the house and reach there. Eventually, police located her house and rescued her.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Gayatri Devi of the Mahila Thana Hanumangarh said the woman and her sister, from Jodhpur, were married to two brothers in Hanumangarh on 10 March. "We somehow entered the room where she was standing on her bed. She was on video call with the social workers and I told them that we are from police and will ensure her safety," she said.
Woman now with a Hanumangarh NGO: ASI
"The woman had kept the mobile phone on a window and was talking to the social workers through sign language," ASI Gayatri Devi said. The woman is now with an NGO in Hanumangarh, and no FIR has been registered so far.
