For three-years, Rajasthan-family is serving 'punishment' for not hosting feast
For the past three years, a family residing in a small-town Chohtan of Rajasthan's Barmer district has been facing consequences of a boycott ordered by panchayat members of 21 villages. The family is being 'punished' for not having a 'mrityubhoj', a feast hosted after someone passes away. Upset over the treatment, the family reported the incident at Bakhasar police station on May 11.
The family doesn't attend functions, kids don't go to school
The feast is supposed to be a custom every one must adhere to after a family member passes away. But since this family, that consists of 30 members, didn't organize the 'mrityubhoj', they suffered. No one in the town speaks with them and they aren't allowed to attend functions. The kids are the most hard-hit as they aren't allowed to go to schools.
Family member alleges panchayat took their land, Rs. 5L
This ostracizing isn't the only thing concerning the family. A member alleged the panchayat took some parts of their land, 25 quintals of millet and Rs. 5 lakh. "They are now demanding for our home, so we have come out to complain to the police," he said. Further, he added no one from nearby areas is willing to marry grown-up girls of the family.
Family informed police last month, alleges no progress in case
The family has demanded action against those who took their lands. Along with this, they also want those who pressurized them to leave their homes to be arrested. However, the family said no action has been initiated, despite the complaint being a little over a month old. Gagandeep Singla, the Superintendent of Police from Barmer promised an investigation into the matter.
