Railways begins cracking down on corruption within its ranks
The Indian Railways has begun cracking down on corruption within its ranks, after PM Modi asked for strict action against all corrupt officers. The Railways has begun sacking all employees who have been convicted by the CBI or Central Vigilance Comission for corruption related offences, across all levels. The move is seen as an attempt to clean up the corrupt image of the railways.
Indian Railways government's most corrupt department?
Statistics have indicated that 49,847 complaints were filed against the government in the CVC involving allegations of corruption. The Indian Railways has topped the list for several years, and this year 11,000 complaints have been filed against them out of the total 49,847. The complaints included allegations of taking bribes and possessing assets disproportionate to their incomes.
Instances of corruption
Assistant Chief Medical Superintendent Dr Ravi Kansal was convicted of accepting a bribe to issue fake "sickness" certificates. Deputy Chief Personnel Officer Vaibhav Chouhan was convicted of accepting a bribe of Rs. 50,000 to appoint peons. Deputy Chief Engineer P K Jena from the Indian Railway Civil Engineering cadre was convicted in a disproportionate assets case.
Modi hauls up Railways
After reviewing several development projects in the country, PM Modi hauled up the Indian Railways for the high number of corruption complaints against them. Officials said, "he directed strictest possible action against Railway officials found guilty of corruption."
