Soon, Railway coaches to get tray-tables, charging points, new taps
Nearly 2,000 old coaches will be refurbished as part of Railways plan which will cost Rs. 600 crore. After the process is complete, coaches will get new tray tables, charging points for every seat, better seat covers, new taps, and mirrors in toilets, reports HT. The Railways plan to refurbish nearly 40,000-50,000 coaches in the next few years. Here's more.
Not only Rajdhani, Shatabdi, other trains to get makeover too
Rajesh Aggarwal, member (rolling stock) of Railway Board said an initiative has been taken to revamp coaches and increase the standard. He added though initiatives usually focused on express trains like Rajdhani and Shatabdi, an umbrella project has been undertaken for all other trains. To ensure operations aren't affected, the coaches will be refurbished when they go for annual maintenance.
Coaches less than 20 years old will be revamped
Another official of the Railway Board said coaches which are less than 20 years old will be refurbished. "We are not investing in them (older coaches) as they will be of no use once they are 25 years old," he added. He said zones have been asked to identify coaches that need revamping while adding wallpapers and seat covers would be changed.
There are other plans as well
Apart from this, Railways are also planning to develop 640 Utkrisht rakes as part of the upgradation process in the next two years. This will cost Rs. 400 crore, it is estimated. "Under Utkrisht scheme, we are making changes across the train," the official added. The cost of refurbishing one coach is Rs. 2.5 lakh and exteriors and minor repairs will be focused on.
