GATE 2018: Question paper and answer key released
IIT-Guwahati has released the question paper and answer key for the GATE 2018 that was held on February 3-4 and 10-11. Candidates can raise objections to the answer key during February 21-23. Results will be announced on March 17. Shortlisted candidates will have to appear for counseling, which will commence from April. This time, the exam was conducted by IIT-Guwahati.
What is the GATE?
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a compulsory requirement to seek admission into Masters and Doctoral programs in engineering, technology and architecture as well as doctoral programs in some science courses in IITs, IISc and other government-supported institutes. Many PSUs seek GATE scores in job appointments. Scores of GATE 2018 will remain valid for three years from the date of announcement.
Here's where you can check the answer key
The GATE 2018 tested candidates in 23 subjects, including biotechnology, mathematics, zoology, physics and chemistry. Earlier, IIT-Guwahati had released candidates' responses for all subjects. The question paper and answer key is available here. Alternatively, you can go to www.gate.iitg.ac.in to access it.
Only 16% candidates cleared the GATE 2017
In 2017, just 1,29,149 candidates of the 7,87,148 who appeared for the exam, or 16%, cleared the GATE. The previous year, it was 15%. GATE organizing chairman GJ Chakrapani called the numbers "not very good", but insisted the difficulty level is reasonable. The qualifying mark of 25 is also not high, he added. "Maybe students aren't taught well or maybe they're not serious enough."
