    What's the story

A 22-year-old woman allegedly killed her mother-in-law by strangling her with a blouse and later tried to dispose of the body in a gunny sack with the help of her husband, Pune Police said on Monday.

"The incident took place at a housing society in Talegaon Dabhade, some 40 kilometers from the city headquarters, on May 21," an official said.

    Incident

Neighbors became suspicious after they saw them with the sack

"The incident came to light a couple of days later after some neighbors saw the accused couple trying to get rid of the sack," he said.

"Pooja Shinde (22) and Milind Shinde (29) have been arrested for murder and destruction of evidence. The victim has been identified as Baby Shinde," said Senior Inspector Bhaskar Jadhav of Talegaon Dabhade Police Station.

The couple hid the body on the terrace

"Pooja and Baby had a fight over some issue on May 21 when the two were alone. She strangled Baby, stuffed the body in a gunny sack, and hid it on the terrace," Jadhav said.

"After the sack started emanating a foul smell and got neighbors suspicious, Pooja and Milind tried to dispose it off in the thicket nearby on May 23," he said.

Further investigation into the incident is underway: Police

"Some neighbors alerted the police. We have found CCTV footage from the vicinity showing the couple trying to get rid of the sack. Further probe into the incident is underway," he added.

    Incident

A similar incident was reported in Patna

A similar incident was reported in Patna in January 2021 where a 33-year-old woman killed her mother-in-law by stabbing her in the head and gouging out her eyes. The woman later tried to kill herself, according to India Today.

The police believes that the accused woman was fed up with constant taunts from her mother-in-law, prompting her to take the drastic step.
