Porsche accident: Bar's owner, manager arrested for serving minor liquor
The owner and the manager of a bar in Pune were taken into custody on Tuesday for allegedly serving alcohol to a minor who later caused an accident and killed two people. "The city police arrested the bar owner and the bar manager who served liquor to the minor accused on the night of the accident," Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar. On Monday, a case was booked against the pub by Pune Police under sections of the Juvenile Justice Act.
Minor's father arrested for permitting underage driving
Earlier in the day, the 17-year-old's father was also arrested from Aurangabad, Maharashtra for allowing his underage son to drive an unregistered Porsche without a license. According to reports, the father—Vishal Agarwal—had bought the Porsche for his son in March but failed to register it due to non-payment of ₹44 lakh road tax. Alongside four others, including owners of two restaurants, he was charged under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act (MVA) and the JJA.
Teen driving Porsche under influence released on bail
The teenager was reportedly driving a Porsche under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. The boy had been detained but was released on bail 15 hours later. After public outrage over the Juvenile Justice Board's decision to grant bail to the minor, Pune police have filed an application with the sessions court to try the juvenile as an adult. The case has now been transferred to Pune Police's crime branch.
Bail conditions of the teenager
The Pune teen was granted bail after the court said that the crime was not "serious" enough to deny him bail. The bail was, however, granted on certain conditions, including undergoing psychiatric evaluation and treatment, working alongside traffic police for 15 days, and writing a 300-word essay on the "effect of road accidents and their solution," among others.
2 engineers from MP killed
The accident occurred around 2:15am on Sunday when 24-year-olds Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, both engineers from Madhya Pradesh working in Pune were returning from a get-together. Eyewitnesses reported that the Porsche, which had no number plates, was speeding at over 200km/h. The minor tried to run away but was caught by locals as the deployed airbags had blocked his view, reports said. Police arrived within 15 minutes of the incident.
Alcohol served at 2 restaurants
According to reports, the minor had hosted a party at Cosie restaurant in Mundhwa neighborhood where alcohol was served. Later, they moved to Blak Club at Marriott Suites in Koregaon Park annex for more drinks. The owners of both establishments were charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for serving alcohol to minors.
JJA sections against father, pubs
The father and the pubs are also being charged under Section 75 and 77 of the JJA. Section 75 deals with willful neglect of a child, carrying a maximum penalty of three years in jail and a fine of ₹1 lakh. Section 77 pertains to supplying a minor with intoxicating liquor or narcotics unless prescribed by a medical practitioner—punishable by up to seven years in jail.
