Pune: Four more held in cricket betting racket
Pimpri Chinchwad Police in Pune district have arrested four more persons from Mumbai and Nagpur for allegedly betting on the international cricket match between India and England, a senior official said on Thursday. "With this, the total number of people arrested in this connection has gone up to 37 as 33 of them had already been held," he said.
The accused were betting through different online applications
"Police has so far recovered material worth Rs. 45 lakh," the official said. "During the probe, it came to light that the accused were betting through different online applications. We arrested four persons from Mumbai and Nagpur and seized a computer and mobile phones to recover the source code of the betting application," he further said.
Accused had links with bookies in India and abroad
It was also found that the accused had links with bookies in India and abroad. "Further investigation is underway," the official said. Notably, 33 persons were arrested by the Pimpri Chinchwad Police on March 26 from three different locations for allegedly betting on the international cricket match between India and England at the Gahujne stadium, Pune, according to a report by The Indian Express.
Accused persons belong to different parts of India
Among the 33 persons, 11 are from Maharashtra, 13 belong to Haryana, four are from Madhya Pradesh, three from Rajasthan, one from Uttar Pradesh, and one from Goa. One of the accused was also known to have his roots in Portugal.
Phones, binoculars, laptops and other items recovered by police
74 mobile phones, three laptops, a four-wheeler, and other items along with Indian currency as well as foreign currency comprising Dollars, Pounds, and Dirhams have been recovered by the police. Four binoculars were also recovered from the accused persons. "Some accused saw ball-to-ball cricket match at Gahujne stadium using binoculars while taking bets," the police said.
