Convicted criminal M Jaishankar, involved in over 30 rapes and 15 murders, committed suicide yesterday in Bengaluru's Parappanna Agrahara prison. Jaishankar, on whom the Kannada movie 'Psycho Shankar' was based, slit his throat with a blade. He was arrested in 2009, but escaped for less than two months in 2011. In that period, he raped and murdered six women and killed two others.
Jaishankar entered police records in 2008-09
Jaishankar, a native of Kanniampatty in Edappadi, Salem, had studied till Class 12 and became a truck driver. One of the first cases he was linked to was the rape and murder of constable M Jayamani of the Kangeyam All-Woman Police Station on August 23, 2009. Her body was found on September 19 near Sankari in Salem. Tirupur police nabbed Jaishankar on October 19.
After his arrest, police find links to more cases
As Tirupur police continued probing the case, they found that Jaishankar had been arrested earlier by Sankari police in a 2008 rape-murder case. "That was the first time he entered police records," said an official. As investigation continued, cops found he was involved in as many as 13 rape-murders and seven rapes in Tirupur, Salem and Dharmapuri in 2008-09.
Six rapes, eight murders in two months
On March 18, 2011, while returning from a court to prison, Jaishankar gave his escorts the slip in Salem. One of the cops guarding him shot himself the next day. Jaishankar was finally nabbed on May 4. Police then found out that during his time outside, he had raped and killed six women in Bellary and murdered a man and a child in Dharmapuri.
Detailed enquiry ordered into his death
Inmates at Parappanna Agrahara noticed Jaishankar lying in a pool of blood at around 2:15am. Prison officials immediately rushed him to a hospital, where he was declared dead three hours later. A detailed enquiry has been ordered into his death.
