Six politicians who professed their love for their wives, unabashedly
Politicians are mostly vocal about everything: their party, its policies, opposition and their follies. What they are pretty elusive about are their respective spouses or their love for them. So when Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal posted two photos along with a tweet thanking his wife "for being a part of my life," people were awestruck. It has since garnered almost 28,000 likes.
Piyush, his wife celebrated 'another year of togetherness'
Piyush stood outside his house on Karwa chauth for wife
Piyush, married to Seema for many years, has rarely spoken about his wife publicly. However the love he has for her speaks volumes. Some even said to have spotted him once during Karwa chauth, standing outside his house, while his wife was holding out the round strainer. Though he was a Union Minister by then, he needed no security or anything, just his wife.
Only your wife supports you during crisis, proudly says Akhilesh
Like Piyush, former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav has also been open about how his wife Dimple has been a solid support during their family feud just before the state Assembly elections in 2017. "Who else can you trust or believe in such difficult times? Only your wife can stand by you in such a crisis," said Akhilesh in an interview last year.
Digvijay Singh-Amrita Rai: A marriage that rocked political circles
This one may make you cringe, but hey give the old man a chance! Digvijay Singh, who married Doordarshan journalist Amrita Rai in 2015, received a lot of backlash for that step. Many alleged that Rai, who was 43 then, has married the then 67-year-old with an eye on his wealth. However, a tweet by Digvijay in July 2016 cleared the air.
They have repeatedly said they married for love, only
It read, "My wife Amrita Rai has sacrificed her right to my property and wealth, and asked me to transfer all rights to my son Jaivardhan. I have done what she asked me to do." Before this, both Digvijay and Amrita have repeatedly emphasized that they married each other only for love and had no ulterior motives in mind. Let's just believe them, okay?
Even when Monica Lewinsky scandal hit them, she supported him
Outside India there are many political leaders who have professed their love for their spouses publicly. For instance, ex-President, Bill Clinton, who has always maintained his wife Hillary, is his best friend and that together they had dreamed of him becoming the US President. Even when the Monica Lewinsky scandal hit them, Hillary stood by him, rock-solid. Politically motivated or love, you decide.
Barack never shied away from expressing his love for Michelle
Talking about US Presidents, how can we not mention Barack Obama. Obama was probably the first important and significant leader of the world who was pretty verbal about what his wife meant to him, always. When he was being sworn in as the President or during his tenure or even in his farewell speech, he made sure he mentioned one name: Michelle, his wife.
Michelle is his 'favorite person to see the world with'
This October, the Obamas had their 26th wedding anniversary, and unsurprisingly Barack wished Michelle, saying she was his "favorite person to see the world with." She responded, thanking her husband "for being a man who always lifts up and honors me and our wonderful girls."
Macron stands by the side of his wife, undeterred
Before we end the list, here's an honorable mention: French President Emmanuel Macron. Macron, who is married to a woman 24 years his senior, shatters every misogynistic beliefs and stands by his wife Brigitte Trogneux. "Without her, I wouldn't be me," Macron maintains. Hitting out at his critics, he said he has no patience for the sexism and "rampant homophobia" behind the disapproval.
Why can all men not think like Macron?
"If I had been 20 years older than her, nobody would have thought that I couldn't be legitimately together," he said. "It's because she's 20 years older than me that people say, 'This relationship can't be tenable.'" We need more men like you, Macron!
