Government teachers set to get pay hikes after a decade

    What's the story

After more than 10 years, teachers and staff in government institutes are set to get a hike in the range of 22-28%.

The proposal will be taken up by the Cabinet this month. It is very likely to be cleared, sources said.

"A decision on allowances will be taken up later," said an HRD ministry official.

    Proposal

Proposed hikes range between 22-28%, separate recommendations for technical institutes

UGC has proposed a hike of Rs.10,396 with a grade pay of Rs. 6,000 for assistant professors, and a raise of Rs. 23,662 for associate professors.

8,00,000 teachers in central and state government colleges and universities will benefit.

Another pay panel governing technical institutes like IITs and NITs has recommended hikes for them too.

It will cost the government Rs. 70,000cr in three years.

    Others

This came after threats of strikes by teachers' associations

The Cabinet will also consider revising the annual system of assessment for teachers' performance. The current point system might be replaced by a grading system.

The suggestions came from a review committee formed last year. After it submitted its recommendations in February, the HRD ministry reviewed them.

Teachers have been threatening strikes over delay in implementation of the seventh pay commission.
