A postgraduate trainee doctor was found raped and murdered last week inside a state-run hospital in Kolkata. The woman had taken a break in the seminar hall during her night shift, where her colleagues discovered her body the next day. The post-mortem report revealed a deep gash in her private parts, crushed throat cartilage, and blood oozing from her eyes, mouth, and private part.
Nationwide protests and political reactions to Kolkata case
The incident sparked massive protests across India. Women from all aspects of life—students, housewives, and professionals—marched across Kolkata city and throughout West Bengal state on a rainy Wednesday night to participate in the Reclaim the Night march. The Kolkata Police has arrested a civic volunteer, Sanjoy Roy, in connection with the crime. However, there have been claims of cover-up and negligence. The matter has now been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
