PM Modi leaves for historic visit to Poland, Ukraine
Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his two-nation tour to Poland and Ukraine on Wednesday. This marks the first visit by an Indian PM to Poland in 45 years, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The last Indian prime minister to visit Poland was Morarji Desai in 1979. During his stay in Poland from August 21-22, PM Modi is expected to discuss a wide range of topics with state leaders.
PM Modi to address Indian community in Warsaw
PM Modi is also scheduled to address the Indian community at an event in Warsaw. Ahead of the PM's visit, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) underscored the historical ties between India and Poland, noting Poland's assistance during Operation Ganga 2022 when over 4,000 Indian students were evacuated from Ukraine. The MEA statement also recalled India's role as a refuge for more than 6,000 Polish women and children during World War II.

Before his departure, PM Modi released a statement praising the diplomatic relations between India and Poland. He described Poland as a crucial economic ally of India in Central Europe. "My visit to Poland comes as we mark 70 years of our diplomatic relations. Poland is a key economic partner in Central Europe," he said.
PM Modi to visit Ukraine amid ongoing conflict
Following his visit to Poland, PM Modi will proceed to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, aboard a "Rail Force One" train. This visit comes at the invitation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and marks the first by an Indian PM in 30 years since diplomatic ties were established between India and Ukraine. The trip is particularly significant as it occurs amid an ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
