Donkeys arrested for destroying plants outside jail in UP: Report
In a bizarre incident, a herd of eight donkeys was arrested last week for destroying exotic plants outside a jail in Uttar Pradesh's Jalaun district. According to DNA, the saplings were planted under 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' to increase green cover. However, now most of them have allegedly been grazed upon by stray animals, causing the local police department a loss of Rs. 60,000.
The donkeys were detained for four days
Held for four days, the donkeys were released on Monday only after a bail amount was paid and an affidavit bond signed. The donkeys were chained at the jailer's old house within the prison compound. Making animal grazing a criminal offense in Uttar Pradesh, the local police reportedly said the action would give a strong message to herders to keep their cattle in check.
UP police takes to Twitter to rubbish the report
However, the UP police took to Twitter on Monday to dismiss the report. It said the state police had nothing to do with the arrest and the media reports floating around were baseless. "Dear @ndtv #uppolice has nothing to do with their arrest or custody. We request you to check your facts with us next time," it tweeted as a response to NDTV's report.
