'Perfectly-healthy' man suffers brain hemorrhage after loud DJ music exposure
What's the story
A 40-year-old man from Balrampur district, Chhattisgarh, reportedly suffered a brain hemorrhage after he was exposed to loud DJ music.
The case has baffled doctors as the patient, Sanjay Jaiswal, had no history of high blood pressure, illnesses, or any injuries.
The incident took place last week when Jaiswal was loading equipment into a DJ vehicle. All of a sudden, he started to feel dizzy.
Medical mystery
Unusual symptoms lead to unexpected diagnosis
At first, he tried to dismiss it and went home. But later that night, when he was making dinner, he started vomiting and experiencing excruciating headaches.
Dr. Shailendra Gupta, Associate Professor of the ENT Department at Government Medical College Ambikapur, advised a CT scan after Jaiswal arrived at the hospital in a wheelchair.
The scan revealed a blood clot in his brain caused by a ruptured blood vessel, typically associated with high blood pressure or injuries, TOI reported.
Sound impact
Loud music identified as potential cause
"Initially, the patient was reluctant to disclose the truth, possibly due to his association with the DJ. He literally wept when we insisted he tell the truth and revealed that he was engaged in loading and unloading equipment when the DJ was playing loudly," Dr. Gupta told TOI.
"There is a possibility of a brain hemorrhage due to loud sound as not everyone has a strong occipital region at the back of their head."
Health hazards
Noise pollution and health risks: A growing concern
Dr. Gupta further stated that a study conducted in 2022 revealed high noise levels at busy intersections led to hearing loss in 12 out of 50 traffic personnel.
Additionally, 25 individuals experienced high blood pressure, insomnia, and irritability.
He expressed concern over the increasing trend of loud DJ music during festivals and weddings, urging authorities to control noise pollution.
Legal intervention
High court reprimands government over noise pollution
In October 2023, the Chhattisgarh High Court reprimanded the state government for its failure to address noise pollution.
The court ordered an affidavit detailing actions taken against DJs and amplifiers contributing to this issue.
Following this directive, a high-level meeting was convened by the Chief Secretary with district collectors and superintendents of police to ensure effective action against those violating prescribed volume rules.
