What's special about world's second-largest hospital coming up in Patna
Bihar will soon become home to the world's second-largest hospital by capacity once the construction of the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) is completed. The project, costing a staggering ₹5,540 crore, is designed to offer world-class medical education and healthcare services. With an ambitious target of 5,462 beds, 250 MBBS seats, and 200 postgraduate seats, this state-of-the-art medical facility is poised to revolutionize healthcare in the region.
PMCH to boost medical education and research
Furthermore, the hospital will function as a research hub, offering cutting-edge laboratories for medical innovation. The PMCH was established in 1925 as the first medical college in the then-Bihar and Orissa province, which was formed in 1912 following its separation from the Bengal Presidency. In February 2021, CM Nitish Kumar laid the foundation stone for PMCH redevelopment. The first phase of demolition began in second half of 2021 to clear the way for modern, high-rise constructions on the PMCH campus.
Kumar inaugurated buildings worth ₹904 crore
Two years later, Kumar inaugurated buildings worth ₹904 crore of the PMCH in Februray. He also laid the foundation stones of 16 other projects on the occasion. The buildings inaugurated by Kumar include the outpatient department (OPD), a 550-bed hostel for medical students, a multi-level vehicle parking facility, and a 132/ 33 KV green, gas-insulated power substation.
Project expected to be completed in 7 years
At the time, Kumar said the second phase of the redevelopment of PMCH "will begin in March, while the third phase will also be started soon to expedite the completion of the entire plan." Several old buildings of PMCH, including the old medical superintendent's bungalow, jail ward, and nurses' hostel, have been dismantled as part of the renovation project. The government aims to finish the project in seven years.
