Uttar Pradesh: Woman, daughter write to President for passive euthanasia
Days after the Supreme Court legalized passive euthanasia, a woman and her 33-year-old daughter, both suffering from muscular dystrophy, have written to President Ram Nath Kovind seeking permission for it. The letters from 59-year-old Shashi Mishra and her daughter Anamika from Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur, have been sent directly to the office of the President of India, said city magistrate Raj Narayan Pandey. Provide financial help for treatment or allow to end life
Anamika Mishra said that she had also written letters to PM Narendra Modi and CJI Dipak Misra requesting them to provide financial help for their treatment or allow them to end their lives. "My father Ganga Mishra was also suffering from muscular dystrophy and died almost 15 years ago. After his demise, there is no one to look after the family," she said.
The disease leads to increasing weakening breakdown of skeletal muscles
She said her mother started suffering from muscular dystrophy in 1985. Anamika contracted the genetic disease, which leads to increasing weakening and breakdown of skeletal muscles, six years ago. The magistrate said, "As far as financial assistance from the state government is concerned, it will be given from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, and the procedure will be completed after they submit an application."
What else did Anamika Mishra say?
"In the past after writing a letter (with blood) to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then President Pranab Mukherjee, seeking help, a financial assistance of Rs. 50,000 was given," Anamika said. The amount was not enough to sustain the mother-daughter duo beyond a few days.
